Who am I?

My name is Abby and I am a journalist from the south coast of the UK.

I grew up playing the flute and had a grand plan to become a musician but one thing led to another and here I am! I still play my flute casually though as it is a great stress reliever.

I have a neurological disability and use a wheelchair, this shapes a large part of who I am and also the kind of stories I cover. I think it is so important to have disabled representation in the media and I really hope I can help contribute to that.

The 25th World Scout Jamboree

The moment I decided that journalism for me was while sat in a field in South Korea with nearly 50,000 Scouts from around the world.

I was privileged enough to have the opportunity to attend the 2023 World Scout Jamboree as part of the UK media and communications team. Those few weeks were unbelievably stressful and ended in UK Scouts being evacuated and moved to hotels all around Seoul.

But I gained so much from the experience, I learned to work in a stressful fast moving situation on very, very little sleep. And I found a passion for speaking to people and hearing their stories. Even in the most difficult situation, the young people managed to find positives.

Where that took me

That experience led to me starting a multimedia journalism degree at Bournemouth University, which has given me the most incredible set of opportunities.

It has allowed me to learn new skills and grow into a confident journalist with a broad range of storytelling techniques.

I have had the opportunity to interview a shadow education minister, several local MPs and council leaders.

I travelled to Paris for the 2024 Paralympics to report on swimmer, and Bournemouth University student, Leo McCrea as he won a gold medal!

I participated in overnight coverage of the 2024 US election, presenting live for two hours and also working on the big board as results came in.

Professional work

In June 2024, I was very proud to spend a few weeks at the Guardian as part of the Positive Action scheme. During this time I worked on a story about the SEND statutory override. I also worked with the multimedia reactive news team during the 12 day war between Israel and Iran which was intense but really sharpened my Premiere Pro skills.

In November 2025 I spent a week with the Local Government Chronicle where I felt at home working on my favourite topic! I am particularly proud of a story I wrote on the local elections and whether or not they would be postponed which was one of the most read articles that month.
